Sacrifices.

I am not equipped to answer a deep a question as this, nor is this a discourse. This is a feeble attempt from a fellow human trying to make sense of this universe and our place in it, if there is one. However, this does not absolve me of a responsibility, a standard I hold for myself very strictly, to be chucked out of the window just because I couldn’t think of a better argument in favour for or against this particular tangle. Nevertheless let’s begin. There is a ritual, which I am sure all Hindus you know of do it. If you are a Hindu yourself, you might have done it yourself. After a Pooja of any kind is done, a coconut is broken, with a single blow to the ground, and the liquid is thrown over everyone present. This is a very auspicious thing to do and, if the coconut is broken in a single blow, it is applauded as it is frankly a difficult thing to get right. Anyway, I sat to wonder what the purpose behind it was. Soon I realised that this line of inquiry led me to answers like...

The Matka Boy.

Image
It was as good as any a day for the boy, holding his matka in front of him walking silently, behind his mother as they both walked over to the upper part of the river. His mother filled her two matkas, put one on her head and the other her waist and gestured him to do so too. He filled his matka, but unbeknownst to him, two snakes had entered the matka with the water. He didn't realise it and held it over his head. They both started walking home, with the boy sloshing a bit of water with every step he took. He reached home and his mother went to her cooking while he was putting his matka down, for the animals to drink from. One of the snakes raised his head out of the water and before he could react, suddenly bit him on his hand. The boy dropped the matka, which incidentally didn't break. The boy whimpered in pain as tears welled up in his eyes, but he didn't cry for help. Another head was raised from the matka and the snake spoke in a hissing sort of voice, ...

The Gift.

Image
She was giddy with happiness when she held to open the gift. The black ribbons came off as if made of woven air and slipped into nothingness when she pulled them. She loved these gifts from her lover.  She sat down and put the gift on the ground. She wanted to savour the moment as long as she could. She almost cursed the dual nature of wanting to prolong this feeling and also for the climax to come.  She quickly breathe a few and closed her eyes as if saying a prayer before opening it. She held the gift in her delicate hands and opened her eyes with it.  It was a wolf pup. The cutest little baby who was pink at his nose with not even the eyelids completely open yet. It made a yelp noise as it tumbled inside the box clumsily. It rubbed its snout on the inside of the box looking for milk, but none came. After a while it got silent as went to sleep. She was dizzy with happiness. It was perfect gift she could have got. She absolutely loved it. Ev...

Alone.

Image
A crone's heart of mine bleeds, Torrents of tears fall on an icy stone, The world around tumbles noisily, While I sit in the middle, but all alone. Desolation also leaves and breath stops, The winds have changed, too hard I try, Yet these blows and thorns of steel have not, And neither shall they make me cry. The absent shoulders and laps are cold I want deep roots in me and mine, No one there to answer my questions, Is ask of a thing so small, so big a crime?
