Necessary Monsters.

When we observe the definition of a monster, different dictionaries give different definitions, but they all circle around a few specific words. Huge, ugly, evil, imaginary, angry and troublesome, are the adjectives commonly used to describe them. Also, when we take up the quest of searching where these monsters are found, they are found everywhere, i.e: monster of the seas, monster of the forest, etc. These examples, are enough to conjure up very vivid descriptions of monsters, though different for each of us, will all be in similar veins. But when that gaze is directed inwards, we also find some of it inside us. Anger, greed, lust, and so on. So we ultimately infer that monsters dwell in each and everyone of us. We are all capable of being bad. And not just plain old bad, we are capable of being absolutely inhumane, cruel and evil. History has enough examples of that. The monsters existing in each one of us, is the reflection of what is the worst that we can become. When small children lash out on everyone, in anger, that is a monster that has taken over. An employee listening to his boss's rant about how he is not good at his job, is a ticking time bomb of a monster. And so we learn, that monsters don't exist all the time, but they jump in and out of existence. So they are everywhere, and there is nothing that we can do about them. And mostly when we are at the most vulnerable, they come up with the fullest force. Unpredictable, rash, evil and, contradictory to its definition, extremely real and tangible, they become.

So now once we establish that they are indestructible, like for example, poles on a magnet. And so however many times you cut it, it will always end up a dipole, both poles even on the smallest of its particles, so monsters will exist always. People of the Sanatan Dharma, believe that everything that exists, only exists, because it has a purpose. If there would be no reason for something to exist, it just wouldn't exist. So when we apply that logic to the existence of monsters, the question arises, then why do monsters exist? If we say that they exist only to make bad things happen, and to balance out the good deeds of the people and the world, then that is non-falsifiable and therefore refutable. So then why do monsters exist?

Let us think of an example of a person incapable of being cruel. "Whenever his hand is pushed, he curls up in a ball, and lets everyone ride over him. It's not that he is incapable of speaking, but he is afraid of hurting others, he knows how words hurt, and so he refuses to hurt others." This is the lie he tells himself. The truth is even if he would start to retaliate, he wouldn't be able to do it, because he is incapable of being cruel. So there is not much choice for him, and he has to be the scapegoat everyone makes him. Now let's take another person, who is fully capable of being cruel, a person like you and me. And his hand is forced, he now has a choice. He can choose to be kind and, allow others to use him, while knowing very well, what exactly is happening. Or he can choose to be cruel and respond in kind. He can fight, and he can hurt those who hurt him. He can hurt others more than they can hurt him. But still when he chooses not to hurt, isn't he a better person that the former, who chooses not to hurt, simply because he is unable of bring cruel? While this person can be cruel as hell, he still chooses to be soft. That makes character, his decisions, is what makes him a better person. So when we too choose to be not cruel, with the knowledge that we can be a really bad person, that itself gives us strength. Because now, we are not considerate out of force, we are considerate out of choice. And this is where the monsters existence becomes tenable. The ever lurking presence of monsters, reminds us what we can be, and what we ought not to be, pings us everytime we take decisions. This is why the monsters exist, and they manifest themselves, even when we slightly let go of our morals, and take a small step towards becoming monsters ourselves. It is these monsters that gaurd the boundaries of our morale, and when we overstep them, we become something that we are not. And therefore to be good, evil things don't necessarily have to exist in the outside world for us to balance them out, but they definitely have to exist inside us, so that we can fight them and overcome them, and do good to ourselves first, and then to others.
